Fits Do Race Reviews: Grandma’s Marathon 2017

June 23, 2017 By Jessie Benson 17 Comments

Last Saturday, I ran my 27th marathon, the 41st running of Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, MN. This was my 3rd time running Grandma’s. I ran it in 2015. It was a downpour that year, but the rain kept us cool. I set a 13 minute PR! In 2016, I ran it again and it was a bust- red flag situation, super hot, not great. I ran a 3:49- a painful 3:49. Why did I run it again? Well, it's still a great Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: Grandma’s Race Week!

June 18, 2017 By Jessie Benson 9 Comments

Hi all! I'm here as usual with my weekly recap. This week? Race week! I’ll be honest, I was forecast stalking all week. I have three different weather apps on my phone:  Dark Sky, Weather Channel, and AccuWeather. I knew it was going to be a warm day, but I was hoping that it might rain on us to keep us cool...Spoiler alert: it was a hot and humid one in Duluth! Since I wasn’t racing the Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: Four Weeks Until Grandma’s Marathon with my Sister!

May 20, 2017 By Jessie Benson 13 Comments

Happy Sunday! I'm here with my weekly recap and happy to share that I'm feeling a lot more normal again,  (post-concussion, etc). This week was pretty solid in training, here's how it went; Monday: [solidcore] Tuesday: 4 hot (upper 80's!) miles with Matilda after work. Wednesday: 7.5 miles after work. Around mile 6.5, it started to get really dark and windy. I tried to pick up the pace to Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: A Scary End to the Week.

May 7, 2017 By Jessie Benson 24 Comments

I'm supposed to be limiting my time on electronics this weekend (I'll explain at the end of this post) but fortunately I had written most of this recap Friday to get a head start. I'll keep it short and sweet, I promise! Here's my weekly recap of training to run Grandma's Marathon with my sister Erin on June 17: Monday: I woke up to snow/rain mix, so I decided to save my run until after work. Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: One Week Until Grandma’s Marathon & Running in NYC!

June 12, 2016 By Jessie Benson 12 Comments

Happy Sunday! Another week, another weekly recap. Grandma's Marathon is just one week away! This week was full-on tapering, but I still had some memorable runs. Monday: Short tempo run: 2 mile warm-up, 3 miles at a 7:30 pace, 2 mile cool-down. Due to the particular route, I ended up with 7.5 miles total. Tuesday: Easy 6.5 miles in the morning. Pure Barre class after work. Wednesday: 6 Continue Reading

Friday Five: Five Reasons to Love Grandma’s Marathon

June 10, 2016 By Jessie Benson 4 Comments

I ran 18 marathons before I finally gave Grandma's Marathon a shot. Dustin had run it twice, once before I knew him, and once when we were dating, but both times it was very hot and sunny. His experiences weren't great, so I was never tempted to run it. But then my running club friends would run it each year, and they would have awesome races there. They would tell me what a fun weekend it is in Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: 13 Days Until Grandma’s Marathon 2016!

June 5, 2016 By Jessie Benson 6 Comments

Taper time! This week was a noticeable cutback in mileage and intensity. Time to let my legs rebuild and recover in time for Grandma's Marathon 2016. (For tips on the taper, check out this post.) *Also...look at that terrible form above. That picture is from the Lebanon 10k. When I start to work hard, my arms cross all over my body! Monday: The Brian Kraft 5k! With 2 miles to warm-up, 3.1 of Continue Reading

That was FIVE years ago today. I went out for a 20 mile run, as I was preparing for the Antarctica marathon which would have been 3 weeks later. About 8 miles in, I slipped (hard) while turning on the ice and twisted my leg in an unnatural way…leaving me with a broken tibia & fibula. And a cancelled trip to Antarctica.
.
.
Fortunately, I was able redo that trip & marathon in 2019 (& take countless penguin 🐧 pics!) and have run 11 marathons since that traumatic day. I am so grateful to be healthy & have running in my life. When I look back at these pictures, I know how hard this period was, and I have to remind myself to never take it for granted.
.
As corny as it is, I GET to run. ❤️💙🏃‍♀️ I do not ever want to lose it again.

My first time skiing (well, snowboarding) the Alps My first time skiing (well, snowboarding) the Alps was a success, and by success I mean it didn’t end with a helicopter evacuation after an epic knee injury like the last Wedel sister who skied the Alps (hi @emariecantu 😉)

I’ve snowboarded quite a few US resorts and Europe was different in a few ways:
1: Lift tickets are cheap! Only €60 a day vs. $200+ in the US
2: It’s all about the coffee breaks, fondue lunches, and après ski (for the locals, not for us. See video from La Folie Douce as example 🥳)
3: Nothing is “out-of-bounds”. Ski at your own risk. You’re responsible for your own rescue cost.
4: The trails are rated green, blue, red, and black. No double black diamond rating, just a ton of off-piste. The mountain is huge.
5: Food and wine is expensive but mostly good.
6: It wasn’t that busy for us but when it was, the lift lines were chaos, every man for himself 🤣

I did it in Mpls too but it’s much more common in London; my office has showers + towels + lockers + blowdryers/flat irons. There are always other runners & cyclists getting ready in the morning & I see many other runners on my run in with their packs on! My shortest route is just over 4 miles (Hampstead to Leicester Square) but I can always lengthen it if I want (though the backpack is pretty heavy in the winter.) It’s a really fun option that I’m glad I can do on occasion. Have you tried it?

Last post on the grid about Lapland, I swear!😁 Last post on the grid about Lapland, I swear!😁 We did a husky sled 5k with Tundra Huskies; I was worried about whether I would be comfortable with how the dogs were treated but these pups seemed very well cared for and they seemed to LOVE pulling the sled! I was “so brave” & even drove the sled. Afterwards we got to give some snuggles to the retired pups ❤️🐕🥶🇫🇮

Dustin and I “participated” in our family turk Dustin and I “participated” in our family turkey trot from afar (he did his yesterday in the rain ☔️). Thanksgiving is kinda my family’s thing, as it’s the holiday where all 4 of my sisters + partners + kids + my parents all get together vs Christmas; there’s always a race of some kind, often a lip sync competition, a clothing swap, maybe a squabble or two (& bets on who causes the drama) and endless laughs. It’s weird not being there this year, especially since it’s the first without my mom 😕. But my dad is keeping traditions alive & sent us our “bibs” to join in from London. ❤️🦃🏃‍♀️🏃🏼 (and I’m so glad the rest of my sisters will be there for him.)
