Hi there. It’s been quite the week. Without getting into too much detail, my mom is in the hospital. Our visit to the cabin was cut a little short, as I decided to book a last-minute flight to Michigan to be with her on Tuesday night through Saturday. I still managed to get in some runs, but they were all over the place- literally.
Monday: We were still at the cabin. My coach had me do 10 x 100m sprints, which I translated to about 30 seconds strides with 1 minute recovery in between, on the country roads with plenty of hills. 5 miles total.
It was rainy and windy during the run, but with the hope that the weather would clear, we decided to head into Duluth to check out Minnesota Point on Lake Superior.
We walked the beach for an hour or so and then hiked a bit through the woods afterwards. Matilda loved being off leash on the beach! Running through the sand is probably one of her favorite things.
After an afternoon at Minnesota Point, we grabbed dinner at the Thirsty Pagan in Superior. Highly recommend this place!
Tuesday: Dustin started this run with Matilda and me, but left us in the dust to do his workout. Tilda and I did an easy 4 miles at the cabin. Then we rushed home so I could catch a flight to Michigan.
Wednesday: 5 miles in Michigan on random roads near my parents’ house.
Thursday: 5 miles in the pouring rain in Michigan
Friday: My sister Erin (who was also in Michigan to be with my mom) is training for a fall marathon, so I joined her for her long run. We did 10.5 miles nice and slow.
Saturday: Rest. I flew back to Minneapolis this afternoon.
Sunday: 5 miles easy with Matilda, 2 hours of Stand-Up Paddleboarding with Dustin on the chain of lakes.
Total: 34 miles
I realized that I haven’t officially announced my next marathon, but we have registered for the Richmond, Virginia marathon on November 14th. It’s a Saturday marathon, which I LOVE and it is advertised as flat and fast.
It’s also “America’s Friendliest Marathon.” And it’s in a state that we haven’t run yet, so this one will actually take us closer to our 50-state goal (Tokyo and Grandma’s marathon did not).
One more thing- those Run MSP pint glasses in the first photo above? Those are from Gear Running Store. I stopped by there today to buy a gift card for a friend. Of course, I also ended up picking up this Oiselle tank too and some more NUUN.
While I was checking out, the owner Paul gave me these pint glasses! How incredibly generous! He said it was a thank you for always supporting their store. What good people. (The pint glasses are for sale there if you’re interested in your own.)
Definitely go check out Gear Running Store at 44th/France. Their Run MSP gear is the best and they carry a ton of brands (like Oiselle!) in apparel and shoes.
While I was there, I also picked up a flyer for a pub run that Gear is hosting at Brit’s on Sunday, August 2nd at 10 am. I plan to register – hope to see you there!
Sorry if this recap was a bit disorganized! I’ll admit, it was a bit of an emotional week but running was there. Running definitely helped. Running made me feel like myself and it make me feel normal during a stressful time.
How did running help you this week?
Hope your mom is ok! Thinking of you <3
Thanks so much erin!
Looking forward to our dinner Thursday at Burch 🙂
Jessie, I’m so sorry to hear about your mom. I’ve been through something similar many, many times, so please let me know if there’s anything I can do. Looking forward to seeing you on Friday morning at Mill City!
Thanks Sara, you are too kind. Looking forward to some miles on Friday morning. I heard its the two year anniversary of Flapjack Friday!
Jessie so sorry to hear about your mom, glad you were able to be there with her and pray that whatever is going on health or otherwise she will recover quickly. Always love hearing about your running updates, they really help me keep motivated!
And lastly it is exciting to hear about your next marathon – you are going to kill it 🙂
Thanks Alli, I really appreciate it. She had brain surgery, which actually went okay, but was re-admitted to the hospital afterwards with a bunch of issues…she’s been there for almost two weeks now 🙁 Your positive thoughts are much appreciated!
Sorry to hear about your mom Jessie! Sending her healing thoughts!
Funny story. I have that same Oiselle tank in green (purchased from Gear of course!). It’s one of my favorites. So one day I come inside from my run and my 9 year old son says, completely serious, “MOM!! Your sweat stains are in the shape of birds!”.
Thanks Kari for the nice words.
Ha, I hadn’t thought about that with the Oiselle tank- sweat in the shape of birds- your kid is so cute 🙂
