Weekly Recap: A Hot Mess…

July 23, 2016 By Jessie Benson 13 Comments

This past week was a bit of a bust...Every training cycle has its highs and lows. I'd classify this past week as a "low." I didn't have any runs where I felt strong and my paces were so far off of where they should be. I know that it was the heat and humidity; of course it was...But it was still hard. I still love running...I just am feeling a little disheartened with my runs this Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: Training for the Big Cottonwood Marathon!

July 10, 2016 By Jessie Benson 17 Comments

Yes, it's official! I registered for the Big Cottonwood Marathon on September 10th. Boston registration opens on September 12, so this will be my 'last chance marathon.' It starts at altitude, but it has a LOT of downhill. My coach said I'll need to do some hard training on the downhill to prepare my quads. But look at those stats- 25% of runners qualify for Boston at Big Cottonwood. I like Continue Reading

Weekly Recap & The Post-Marathon Blues.

June 26, 2016 By Jessie Benson 16 Comments

I have a bit of the post-marathon blues. I trained hard for Grandma's Marathon and it didn't go the way I had hoped. I think another reason for the blues that normally when I finish a marathon, I have the next one selected and a potential trip booked to look forward to. But this time? I'm a little lost. I don't know what's next on my racing schedule. I don't have my next marathon Continue Reading

Weekly Recap and Lots of Vizsla Pictures!

May 17, 2016 By Jessie Benson 7 Comments

Last week was a big week of training for Grandma's Marathon 2016! Here's how it went: Monday: Morning run: 2 mile warm-up, 8x300m sprints with 90 second recovery, 2 mile cool down. I was supposed to do the 300m sprints at a 6:55 pace. Considering my goal for the TC 1 Mile was a 6:30 min/mile and 300m is much shorter than a mile, this seemed doable, but at 6 am, it felt pretty hard and I often Continue Reading

I’m Running Grandma’s Marathon 2016!

May 8, 2016 By Jessie Benson 11 Comments

I am running another marathon in 6 weeks! In 2015, I ran three marathons- the Tokyo Marathon, Grandma’s Marathon, and the Richmond Marathon, in 3:54, 3:42, and 3:40 respectively. After coming very close to qualifying for Boston at Richmond, I ramped back up and raced the Phoenix Marathon at the end of February, where I DID qualify for Boston. But, as many of you know, 34 seconds under the Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: London, Here I Come!

April 19, 2016 By Jessie Benson 10 Comments

I'm in the final stretch for the London Marathon! So ready for a vacation... Here's how training went this week: Monday: I didn't get up for my morning run and then I was stuck at work until about 7:45 (<-- that is why I run in the morning!) I changed at work and zipped over towards Minnehaha Parkway to start my workout: 2 mile warm-up, 4 miles at a tempo pace of 7:40 and 2 mile Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: Two Weeks until London!

April 13, 2016 By Jessie Benson 9 Comments

I'm a little behind on my week recap! I really enjoy writing these posts, as they give me a chance to reflect back on my training each week. It allows me to see patterns that are working or not working while keeping me accountable. Time to get caught up! Monday: Tempo workout after work: 2 mile warm-up, 4 miles at tempo pace of 7:45, 1 mile cool-down. 7 miles total. Tuesday: 5.5 mile recovery Continue Reading
