February 2, 2020 By Jessie Benson 33 Comments

Training for the Atlanta marathon is flying by! Only 4 weeks to go. Here's how training went this past week: Monday: Treadmill miles after work, 8 miles at 9:15 min/mile. Tuesday: 7 miles with the morning run club, 9 min/mile. Discover Strength session after work. Wednesday: Christie and I had the same workout, so we met at 5:30 am to get it done. 25 minute warm-up, then 6x(90 Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: 3 Weeks Until the Antarctica Marathon

February 24, 2019 By Jessie Benson 40 Comments

'Twas a good week! I got to run outside TWICE, including my 20 miler! Here's how training went this week for the Antarctica Marathon: Monday: President's Day! I had the day off of work. What's a girl to do? Head to an 8 am dentist appointment :) But after the dentist, I met my friend Vicki for a 7.25 mile run- OUTSIDE! After 50 miles on the treadmill last week, running outside in the Continue Reading

56 Weeks Until The Antarctica Marathon: Change of Plans.

February 17, 2018 By Jessie Benson 55 Comments

56 weeks? Hopefully. That is, if we can defer to next year. Why? Because this happened. If you're versed in reading x-rays, you'll see two severe breaks below. Apparently there are three. According to the ER doc, I will need surgery ASAP to put in plates. I can't make any appointments until Monday, so for now I wait, uncomfortably... And...Antarctica is off the table. So Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: 5 Weeks Until the Antarctica Marathon

February 11, 2018 By Jessie Benson 29 Comments

Another week of training for the Antarctica Marathon is complete! Let me share how things went: Monday: 8.5 miles after work. I tried my best to pick up the pace for some of it, but struggled due to to...well, due to everything I think! The snow, the weather, tired legs from two consecutive 60 mile weeks. I had a tempo workout on the schedule but I didn't hit the paces. I did what I could. Winter Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: 6 Weeks Until the Antarctica Marathon

February 4, 2018 By Jessie Benson 21 Comments

Another wintry week of training for the Antarctica Marathon, while living in Minneapolis! Here's how everything went this past week: Monday: 8 mile run commute into the office. Slippery, snowy, same old story in Minnesota in January. Tuesday: Rest day! I had a work event at a cooking school; it was so much fun! Wednesday: I was awake and in my running clothes, ready to run commute. I Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: 8 weeks Until the Antarctica Marathon

January 21, 2018 By Jessie Benson 31 Comments

Okay, I know last week's post was "8 Weeks Until the Antarctica Marathon" but I was wrong. This week is actually 8 weeks until the race, 7 weeks until we depart on the trip. Whoops! **And for any potential burglars planning to stop by while we're gone, my sister's family is going to be housesitting for most of the time, so I wouldn't recommend it! Back to the recap of training for the Continue Reading

Fitting Remarks: Running Through the Winter

January 4, 2017 By Jessie Benson 6 Comments

I've been doing a lot of complaining so far this winter about running outside and the winter has only just begun! You've probably noticed how much more I'm opting for the treadmill (which is an easy choice when its right in the basement) And I did take a hard fall the other day on an icy winter run that left me with a nasty bruise and shaken confidence. There are reasons for all this complaining, Continue Reading

This is my blog about finding The Right "Fit." I'm an avid runner, marathon enthusiast, and fitness experimentalist who uses my little space of the internet to share my passion for and experiences with running and fitness (...and a little about fashion.)

I write mostly about running and my quest to run a marathon in every state and every continent. But you'll also find some information about different fitness classes in the Twin Cities and more.

That was FIVE years ago today. I went out for a 20 mile run, as I was preparing for the Antarctica marathon which would have been 3 weeks later. About 8 miles in, I slipped (hard) while turning on the ice and twisted my leg in an unnatural way…leaving me with a broken tibia & fibula. And a cancelled trip to Antarctica.
.
.
Fortunately, I was able redo that trip & marathon in 2019 (& take countless penguin 🐧 pics!) and have run 11 marathons since that traumatic day. I am so grateful to be healthy & have running in my life. When I look back at these pictures, I know how hard this period was, and I have to remind myself to never take it for granted.
.
As corny as it is, I GET to run. ❤️💙🏃‍♀️ I do not ever want to lose it again.

My first time skiing (well, snowboarding) the Alps My first time skiing (well, snowboarding) the Alps was a success, and by success I mean it didn’t end with a helicopter evacuation after an epic knee injury like the last Wedel sister who skied the Alps (hi @emariecantu 😉)

I’ve snowboarded quite a few US resorts and Europe was different in a few ways:
1: Lift tickets are cheap! Only €60 a day vs. $200+ in the US
2: It’s all about the coffee breaks, fondue lunches, and après ski (for the locals, not for us. See video from La Folie Douce as example 🥳)
3: Nothing is “out-of-bounds”. Ski at your own risk. You’re responsible for your own rescue cost.
4: The trails are rated green, blue, red, and black. No double black diamond rating, just a ton of off-piste. The mountain is huge.
5: Food and wine is expensive but mostly good.
6: It wasn’t that busy for us but when it was, the lift lines were chaos, every man for himself 🤣

I did it in Mpls too but it’s much more common in London; my office has showers + towels + lockers + blowdryers/flat irons. There are always other runners & cyclists getting ready in the morning & I see many other runners on my run in with their packs on! My shortest route is just over 4 miles (Hampstead to Leicester Square) but I can always lengthen it if I want (though the backpack is pretty heavy in the winter.) It’s a really fun option that I’m glad I can do on occasion. Have you tried it?

Last post on the grid about Lapland, I swear!😁 Last post on the grid about Lapland, I swear!😁 We did a husky sled 5k with Tundra Huskies; I was worried about whether I would be comfortable with how the dogs were treated but these pups seemed very well cared for and they seemed to LOVE pulling the sled! I was “so brave” & even drove the sled. Afterwards we got to give some snuggles to the retired pups ❤️🐕🥶🇫🇮

Dustin and I “participated” in our family turk Dustin and I “participated” in our family turkey trot from afar (he did his yesterday in the rain ☔️). Thanksgiving is kinda my family’s thing, as it’s the holiday where all 4 of my sisters + partners + kids + my parents all get together vs Christmas; there’s always a race of some kind, often a lip sync competition, a clothing swap, maybe a squabble or two (& bets on who causes the drama) and endless laughs. It’s weird not being there this year, especially since it’s the first without my mom 😕. But my dad is keeping traditions alive & sent us our “bibs” to join in from London. ❤️🦃🏃‍♀️🏃🏼 (and I’m so glad the rest of my sisters will be there for him.)
