Weekly Recap: Three Weeks Until the Phoenix Marathon

February 8, 2016 By Jessie Benson 7 Comments

WOW. What a week. It was my peak week in training and I survived. Barely! Here's how it went. Monday: 1,000m repeats at a "cruise" pace, i.e. 7:40 min/mile. 2 miles to warm-up, 8x1000m with a 1 minute recovery jog in between, 2 miles to cool-down. 9 miles total. I ran this with Matilda the vizsla and when we got to the point in the route where we would usually turn for our normal 7 mile route, Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: The Phoenix Marathon is in 7 Weeks!

January 10, 2016 By Jessie Benson 9 Comments

Another week, another weekly recap of training for the Phoenix Marathon! Here's how it worked out this week: Monday: Easy 6 miles in the morning with my friend Christie Tuesday: Tough workout after work at run club with my "pacer" Dustin.  My coach calls it "15-10-10-5" workout; apparently this workout is kind of notorious with him, as it should be. It was hard! It was 15 minutes at a tempo Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: 9 Weeks Until the Phoenix Marathon!

December 27, 2015 By Jessie Benson 5 Comments

Wow, only 9 weeks until my next marathon... What was I thinking, signing up for another marathon so quickly after Richmond? Well, I know what I was thinking- I was thinking I want to qualify for Boston!  Fingers crossed that my legs hold up for another race. Here's how my training went last week: Monday: Last run in Phoenix. 8 x 1200m at a 7:40 pace. Once again, this was a hard workout Continue Reading

Fitting Remarks: Top 10 Worst People to Run Next to on a Treadmill

March 4, 2014 By Jessie Benson Leave a Comment

In my weekly recap from yesterday, you probably noticed that there was a lot of treadmill miles...in fact, all 45 miles of last week's running were on a treadmill- eeks! Not fun.Though I started to get kind of used to the ol’ treadmill, I can't say I have learned to love it. I definitely prefer to run outside. It was a lot of time indoors pounding out the miles, but it did give me a lot of time to Continue Reading

Weekly Recap: Last Week of February and a Snow Bunny Bachelorette Party!

March 2, 2014 By Jessie Benson Leave a Comment

The week I was in Utah didn't deserve its own weekly recap, as my workouts were minimal (except snowboarding of course). I'll consider it a "cutback" week, and not stress too much about it.However, by Monday, I was ready to delve into my Flying Pig Marathon training. Unfortunately, Minnesota weather wasn't on board will this idea. We received a foot of snow while we were in Park City, and the Continue Reading

Fits Do Product Reviews: Nike Flyknit Shoes

January 15, 2013 By Jessie Benson 2 Comments

By Cool J in MinneapolisThis was what my outdoor thermometer read this morning:So this is where I ended up:But it was a good opportunity for me to try out my new Nike Flyknit shoes.I only managed about 5.5 miles (but with a 1.0 incline!), but it was enough for the “beast” (i.e. the dreadmill). As for the shoes? They were very light. I barely felt like I was wearing shoes at all. However, my toes Continue Reading

Failed Fit: Why Treadmills Are No Fun….

December 27, 2012 By Jessie Benson Leave a Comment

By Cool J in MinneapolisWith the temperature in Minneapolis around 1 degree, and with wind chills below 0, I decided the treadmill was the right fit for me today. While on the treadmill at the gym, I overheard a trainer talking to one of his clients while she warmed up on the treadmill. She was training for her first 5k, and wanted to know what she could expect to run on race day based on Continue Reading

My 42nd full marathon was a unique one- the Marath My 42nd full marathon was a unique one- the Marathon du Médoc, often referred to as “le marathon le plus long du Monde” or “the longest marathon in the world” as it passes by 23 châteaux that hand out wine to the runners. @dustinrbenson tasted every wine, I did maybe 1/2 dozen. Everyone also runs in “fancy dress” or costume with this year’s theme as “Gastronomy.” (Bonus, my sister @emariecantu & her husband participated too so we’ve been able to spend the past 5 days exploring the Bordeaux region with them, making some incredible memories 💙)

It lasted through all of Matilda’s running career (10 years!) and all of Ruth’s so far, including her running adventures around England- but sadly this morning it snapped (3rd pic) beyond repair 😑 and now to figure out how to source a replacement in London…. 🤔

I quickly went online afterwards & registered for next year’s race 🤣 even though I don’t know how it will fit into marathon plans or other travel plans 🤷‍♀️…I ran it 4 weeks after Vienna for fun and fun it definitely was! 🎉🏃‍♀️🇬🇧 I actually don’t remember the last half I ran and this one was HUGE- 24,000 runners! Vienna City Marathon 2023, marathon #41! It was a Vienna City Marathon 2023, marathon #41! It was a challenging one for me, the heat/sun (though not as sunburned as Boston 2022!), tummy troubles, painful side stitches (which can be from over OR under hydrating?) . But I’m proud of myself for sticking with it for the full 42km. The support was great, pretty flat course, LOVED that they played Blue Danube Waltz at the start line 🎼

Love for the marathon still strong 🏅🇦🇹❤️ Next up, Marathon du Médoc (def just for fun) and then Dublin!
