Dustin and I “participated” in our family turk

Dustin and I “participated” in our family turkey trot from afar (he did his yesterday in the rain ☔️). Thanksgiving is kinda my family’s thing, as it’s the holiday where all 4 of my sisters + partners + kids + my parents all get together vs Christmas; there’s always a race of some kind, often a lip sync competition, a clothing swap, maybe a squabble or two (& bets on who causes the drama) and endless laughs. It’s weird not being there this year, especially since it’s the first without my mom 😕. But my dad is keeping traditions alive & sent us our “bibs” to join in from London. ❤️🦃🏃‍♀️🏃🏼 (and I’m so glad the rest of my sisters will be there for him.)

So much fun running my 40th marathon today in beau

So much fun running my 40th marathon today in beautiful Porto! I positive split this race like no other & barely kept things under 4 hours. It got pretty toasty out there and I also probably overestimated my fitness in the first half. 😃 I met another American & enjoyed some miles with her, one of very few at this race, scroll to see a video 😆🏃‍♀️🇺🇸. I’m so happy to have completed a marathon in a new-to-me country, two weeks post-Covid (vaccines work!) Thanks to @erbyatkins for taking me the extra weeks through a backup marathon when Covid cancelled Amsterdam for me. Running is such a fun way to experience a new city ❤️🇵🇹 (Added bonus to have @dustinrbenson show up every few miles on a scooter to cheer ❤️)

3 months in and we finally did a Parkrun (& my sis

3 months in and we finally did a Parkrun (& my sister @emariecantu joined too!) Parkrun is a free-for-all volunteer-run Saturday 5k at most parks around the U.K. Dogs are welcome, but no hands-free leashes. Our local Parkrun is the @hampsteadheathparkrun which is hilly & muddy 😎 There were over 300 participants at ours this week. Will definitely be back!

It’s been fun exploring routes from our new plac

It’s been fun exploring routes from our new place in the Hampstead neighborhood. Hampstead Heath is steps away and offers miles (sorry, kilometers!) of trail and woods and HILLS (+ a few paved paths) and you can link up from the Hampstead extension to the Dollis Valley Greenwalk. Parliament track is right inside the Heath (I love it!) We are also two miles through Camden to Primrose Hill (picture #1 here) which links up to Regent’s Park (which I think is the prettiest London park & currently my favorite one to run!) to Hyde Park to Green/St James Park, all the way back to the Thames where I spent the first month run/exploring London! Running is the best way to get to know a city, isn’t it? 4 weeks until my 40th marathon, the Amsterdam marathon!

We ran Hampstead -> Regent’s Park -> Hyde Park -

We ran Hampstead -> Regent’s Park -> Hyde Park -> Green Park -> Buckingham Palace (& back) to pay our respects to the Queen. It was touching to see ALL the flowers (everywhere 💐) and the crowds, as well as a procession to Hyde for a gun salute later that day. I admit I feel kind of lucky to be here during this monumental though very sad time.

It feels weird to post this as it seems like I’m

It feels weird to post this as it seems like I’m looking for sympathy but rather I’m acknowledging the truth amongst the other stuff I share….Amidst all the “fun exploring of London” the grief is still always present. Every day, I see something and think “oh my mom would love that” or “I can’t wait to tell my mom about so-and-so” - those thoughts are so common followed by the wave of sadness that follows them. But this week, for no apparent reason, I felt her absence from our lives more than ever. Homesickness maybe? I don’t know what triggered it. Grief sucks, doesn’t it? 😞
